Chapter Seventeen

Goodbye Murphy

Detective Murphy sat perfectly still on the balcony outside his meagrely furnished abode, watching the sun set, but his mind was running in overdrive. Laura’s funeral was tomorrow afternoon, and this morning, he’d taken out his nicest suit and assured it was wearable. Then, a couple of hours later, there’d been a knock at his door.

He’d opened it to find a young, fresh faced, and very nervous legal secretary smiling hesitantly at him as she served him papers requesting succinctly that he was not to attend at the behest of Laura’s parents. In fact, they’d covered the bases by having a restraining order issued that prevented him from even visiting Laura’s grave later. They’d even included a personal note.

Dear Johnny,

We apologize for taking these measures, as we understand you, too, are mourning our loss. However, we feel that it is in the best interest of the family – and what Laura would have wanted – for you to maintain the distance that has become typical between you and our daughter. Understand that we still love and respect you but do not believe it would be healthy or appropriate for you to spend time at her grave.

We will find something to send your way to remember her by, and should you wish to show your respect, we have asked that donations be made to the American Autism Association in Laura’s name in lieu of flowers. Thank you for respecting our wishes, and we want the best and brightest future for you.

Sincerely,

Martha and Scott

He scoffed again now, thinking about it, the note still fisted in his hand. Yes, he had been crazy in love with Laura, and that love had never dissipated, even after so much time apart. He couldn’t even entertain the idea that any other man she was with now could love her half as much as he did. But it didn’t matter; he’d been put in his place, and he would stay there, even if it was unfair to deny him the right to the same closure anyone else who cared about Laura would get from attending the funeral.

He only wanted to say goodbye.

Of course, now he was more determined than ever to catch the son of a bitch who’d taken her from him, from her family, from this world. Between his torment of his own daughter, his overall sadistic need to kill, and the personal insult and injury of having made a personal choice for a victim, the Phantom had completely overstepped the bounds of any other criminal Murphy had pursued.

So many questions raced through his head now. How had the bastard known where to find Laura when even Murphy didn’t, and how had he figured out their relationship? The marriage had been annulled and didn’t even show on the records, a favor from a friend for Laura’s sake. The murderous wretch had resources, tapped into things that even most of the people of his department weren’t cleared to know. And he was nothing more than a shadow, flashing in and out of a place faster than his victims died.
